Many children have read Marguerite Henry’s classic children's novel “Misty of Chincoteague” The story is centered around a wild horse on Assateaque Island named Phantom, and her foal, Misty.

The book describes the herding of the wild horses by the fire department and their swim across the Assateaque Channel to Chincoteaque Island where some of the foals are sold.

Check out the 91st crossing, held on the last Wednesday in July, featured in the Smithsonian magazine.
